The IRS has begun distributing $1,400 stimulus payments to approximately 1 million Americans who missed the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. These checks are going out automatically โ no application required.
Who Is Getting the $1,400?
You may be eligible if you:
- Filed a 2021 federal tax return but left the Recovery Rebate Credit blank or listed $0
- Were eligible for the third stimulus check but never claimed it
- Did not file a 2021 return (you have until April 15, 2025 to file and claim it)
When Will the Check Arrive?
The IRS began sending these payments in late 2024, and distribution is continuing into 2026 for late filers. If you qualify, you’ll receive either a direct deposit or a paper check โ the IRS will use whatever payment method is on file from your most recent return.
How to Check Your Status
Log in to IRS.gov and use the “Where’s My Refund” tool. You can also check your IRS Online Account to see if a payment was issued to you.
What If I Never Filed a 2021 Return?
You can still file a 2021 return to claim the credit. The deadline was extended for this specific situation. File through IRS Free File or a local VITA site if your income qualifies.
