Social Security COLA 2027: Early Estimate Shows Seniors Could Get 3.1% Raise
The Social Security Administration has not yet announced the official 2027 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), but early economic data is giving seniors a clearer picture — and it looks more modest than recent years.
What the Early Numbers Show
Senior Citizens League analysts estimate the 2027 COLA could land around 3.1%, based on inflation trends through early 2026. That compares to:
- 2026 COLA: 2.5%
- 2025 COLA: 2.6%
- 2024 COLA: 3.2%
- 2023 COLA: 8.7% (historic high)
What Does 3.1% Mean in Dollars?
The average Social Security retirement benefit is currently about $1,976/month. A 3.1% increase would add roughly $61/month, bringing the average to approximately $2,037/month starting in January 2027.
When Will the Official Number Be Announced?
The SSA typically announces the official COLA in October each year, based on third-quarter CPI-W data. Watch for that announcement in October 2026.
